Course description

Writing the screenplay for the next box office smash or successful independent film requires inspiration; it also requires knowledge of the screenwriter's craft. This workshop course provides both. Students learn screenwriting techniquesóstructuring narrative developing outlines into scripts and composing scenes and dialogówhile writing their own film scripts which can be inspired by a personal experience a short story or a newspaper article. Guest speakers include film industry professionals including entertainment lawyers screenwriters and actors. In addition students view award-winning films screened outside of class time. By the end of the summer term students have a better understanding of the relationships between structure scene and dialogue and are better equipped to write compelling screenplays.
