Course description

College campuses across the country have seen a sharp rise in demand for mental health services since the pandemic, reflecting a more tumultuous society and culture but also mirroring a greater openness to discuss and seek treatment for mental health issues. Unfortunately, many campus mental health clinics have struggled to meet the demand, reducing access, and creating wait times for services.

The complexity of presenting concerns requires mental health providers to be equipped with contemporary, evidence-based, and holistic approaches. Additionally, institutions face increasing responsibility for mitigating risk and supporting student well-being while navigating ethical and legal obligations. Clinicians treating college-aged youth in any clinical setting need to stay abreast of the latest research and best practices for this important population.

This new series will provide a review and update of several mental health issues that are commonly present in the college setting, such as substance use, anxiety, high-risk situations, perfectionism, and neurodiversity, and provide strategies to effectively address them. By discussing current trends, clinical complexities and emerging student needs, the course will enhance providers' confidence and skills in supporting diverse student populations and fostering healthier campus communities. Participants will leave equipped with tools to recognize, assess, and treat students' mental health needs for better long-term outcomes and success in the academic setting.

We welcome any mental health or primary care clinician to join us, whether based on campus or not, to effectively address the mental health needs of college students.
