This course explores the development of Islamic political thought from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. Major themes include the ideas of Islamic modernism and reformism, the question of the caliphate and the birth of the modern nation state, Islam and feminism, the rise of Islamism (or Islamic fundamentalism), theories of Islamic democracy, and the question of jihad and violence.
