Course description

High-performing individuals are often rewarded with promotions to leadership positions. However, excelling as a manager, or supporting a new manager, calls for a different skill set than excelling as an individual contributor. Making this shift requires a strong sense of your personal leadership capabilities, knowledge of people leadership, and expertise in building teams.

Leading People, Building Teams is an interactive, online program that helps build these skills so you can lead with confidence, support colleagues making the transition to management, and strengthen your organization's capacity to coach and retain talent. You'll leave with an implementation plan to bring back to your organization and hone as you advance in your career.

This intensive and engaging program is chaired by Dr. Nathalie Laidler-Kylander who brings decades of experience as a leader across multiple sectors. She has crafted the curriculum to examine leadership through three distinct lenses—personal leadership, leading others, and building teams.

Curriculum

Leading People, Building Teams is an interactive learning experience that combines group work with dynamic asynchronous sessions including a blend of video-based content, self-assessments, simulations, and case studies.

This flexible program consists of three modules:
Module 1: Personal Leadership
Discover and examine your strengths as a leader, empowering you to lead and support leadership from a place of authenticity and self-awareness.

Module 2: People Leadership
Study talent management frameworks and acquire tangible skills for hiring, developing, and coaching your direct reports, including how to tackle difficult conversations.

Module 3: Building Teams
Learn practical approaches to overcoming barriers that reduce team effectiveness, such as groupthink, to create and lead high-performing teams.

In addition to the self-paced content, you'll work alongside peers in three group sessions to complete case studies and simulations. These sessions will allow you to collaborate with professionals navigating similar milestones and challenges and build a network of peers.

The program chair will also lead live sessions at the opening and closing of the program.

Ideal participants for this program include professionals in any sector who are:

  • Preparing for future leadership positions to advance their career
  • Transitioning, or are about to transition, from being an individual contributor to managing people and leading teams
  • Currently managing people for the first time and eager to strengthen their people leadership and team-building skills
  • Managers reflecting on their initial transition to management
  • Managers supporting emerging leaders making their transition to management
