Course description

High-performing individuals are often rewarded with promotions to leadership positions. However, excelling as an individual contributor calls for a different skill set  than excelling as a manager.

Making a shift to leading people and building teams can be challenging. It requires a strong sense of your personal leadership capabilities, knowledge of people leadership, and expertise in building teams. Comprehensive training on these topics can make a tremendous difference in the early stages of a leadership journey.

Leading People, Building Teams is an interactive, self-paced online program that provides those entering management positions with tools, strategies, and insights to foster crucial leadership skills and create successful teams.

Program chair Nathalie Laidler-Kylander brings decades of experience as a leader across multiple sectors. She has developed a curriculum that examines leadership through three distinct lenses—personal leadership, leading others, and building teams.

In this highly engaging program, you'll explore how to lead with confidence and strengthen your organization's capacity to nurture and retain talent. You'll leave with an implementation plan to bring back to your role and organization.

Curriculum

Leading People, Building Teams, an interactive learning experience, combines group work with dynamic asynchronous sessions that include a blend of video-based content, self-assessments, simulations, and case studies.

This flexible program consists of three modules:

Module 1: Personal Leadership
Discover and examine your strengths as a leader, empowering you to lead from a place of authenticity and self-awareness.

Module 2: People Leadership
Study talent management frameworks and acquire tangible skills for hiring, developing, and coaching your direct reports, including how to tackle difficult conversations.

Module 3: Building Teams
Learn practical approaches to overcoming barriers that reduce team effectiveness, such as groupthink, to create and lead high-performing teams.

In addition to the self-paced content, you'll work alongside peers in three group sessions to complete case studies and simulations. These sessions will allow you to collaborate with professionals navigating similar milestones and challenges and build a network of peers.

The program chair will also lead live sessions at the opening and closing of the program.

Ideal participants for this program include:

  • Professionals in any sector who are transitioning, or about to transition, from being an individual contributor to managing people and leading teams
  • Professionals in any sector who recently became managers and are eager to strengthen their people leadership and team-building skills
